channel not working on old turntables

hey guys, I really need to take some time to narrow it down and find out what's causing the problem (if it's needle/headshell or turntable) but I'm forever having problems with the DVS signal on my turntables...sometimes Serato won't read the control vinyl and most troubleshooting pages say that's due to one channel not working.

With Vestax PDX decks i've countered that by replacing the phono cables but I'd rather be using my technics decks at the moment and you can't easily change that cable, and messing around with different headshells normally gets one that works in the end....anyone ever had any work done to service turntables and get both channels working again properly(ideally in London)? want to get an idea if it's worth bothering with or cheaper to buy new ones etc or anyone done something like this themselves or is expert knowledge required?

To be honest I've had the cartridges and technics for about 18 years so they probably don't agree with DVS these days anyway but one channel on a technics has definitely gone anyway and also my brother's got a PDX in the same situation so am curious about fixing these...

Many thanks!

Fuck me, 18 years and your still on the original leads! Dunno bout the Pdx but replacing tech phono's are pretty straight forward, Adam might be able to help, being that he's in London and I understand he recently modded his tech outputs. Failing that acquire a soldering iron, screwdriver, some bollocks and get stuck in ;)

well to be fair it is a ltd edition gold 1200 one ,and its been at my Dads house for quite a few years so it only gets used

occasionally for his classical music lps which are virtually mint anyway lol..its hardly been used since it was new as I had two other techs already that I could play the hell out of

top tips guys thanks a lot! If anyone came here by searching for the same problem and not vegan alternatives to cadburys black magic ;)

this page which seems very reasonable (Manchester - UK) http://deckdr.audioaddictz.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/AARepairsServicing/?hc_location=ufi

DV, the only place where techy turntable speak digresses to vegan confectionary!

cool, thanks for the heads up...I imagined cables were an area worth investing in if I did do any modding...

You don't need to spend a lot, it just has to be pretty robust and shielded properly.

This is the stuff I usually use for repairing technics. It's less than 70p a metre but it's strong, flexible and I've never had any complaints - http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-power/cbbr6313/twin-screened-audio-cable-meter/dp/CBBR6415

REAN (Neutrik) make the best phono plugs, if you buy red-coloured ones you can pull the red ring off to turn it into a black one - http://cpc.farnell.com/rean/nys373-2/phono-plug-red/dp/AV09139

That's everything you need to upgrade the phono cables on two technics for just over a fiver.

I know a lot of people buy monster cables and slice them but the cable is far too stiff and thick (you end up damaging the technics' cable clip) and it's also really hard to solder. Also £40 fucking quid for a single cable?!

Word, my M5Gs are still going strong but my M3D's cable flaked out on me within the first 5 years and I did the Monster cable mod. At the time it was really about what I could go to the store and buy but I agree they're too damn stiff and you either have to whittle down the cable or the clip to fit them. If you're going to use Monster cables or the like the thing to do is buy one set that's longer and then cut it in half so you can use one cable for both tables. Now that I'm much more savvy about this type of thing I would do what you do. I've got crimpers and all that type of shit now.
